About Skiing above the Riviera: the back story

The Alps rise straight behind the coast. Isola 2000, Auron and Valberg are the main ski resorts of the Alpes-Maritimes, all reached by road from Nice, and coaches run from the airport in winter.

How far

Auron, at 1,600 metres, is about 1h30 or 90 km from Nice (Auron’s own website). In winter, coach 83 runs from Nice airport to Valberg (nice.aeroport.fr).

The resorts

Auron is linked to the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée by the Pinatelle gondola; Isola 2000 and Valberg are the other two main resorts.

Check road conditions and snow chains before you set off.

Our advice: go midweek, outside the French school holidays.
