About Cannes: the back story

Cannes is the Riviera at its most polished. La Croisette curves from the Palais des Festivals past the Carlton, Le Majestic and the Martinez to Port Pierre Canto, while Le Suquet, the old town, climbs above the Vieux-Port.

La Croisette

The palaces have their own beaches across the road; the Palais des Festivals is at the western end, by the Vieux-Port.

Le Suquet and Forville

Climb Le Suquet for the view, and go to the Marché Forville in the morning.

Avoid the festival fortnight in May unless you are going to the festival: rooms are scarce and prices high.

The islands

Boats leave from the quai Saint-Pierre for the Îles de Lérins: the Fort Royal on Sainte-Marguerite, the monks and their vines on Saint-Honorat.

Our advice: spend one day on the islands; it is the calmest day you will have in Cannes.
